My highly independent son was offended that I expected him to call home to let me know his whereabouts if he was going to be out later than usual. I explained that this is just common courtesy, and was something he might do if he only lived with roommates. It’s just so the people you live with don’t unnecessarily worry about you. He didn’t like it, but at least he understood why I thought this was important.
