In the present day, azure has come to describe a particular shade of blue. Perhaps because of the wide variety of synonyms of different origins that English speakers have always had to choose from, many words that on the surface mean the same thing have been adapted to have slightly different meanings. I imagine there are few other languages in the world in which the speakers have the capability for such rich, precise meaning and description as we do in English.
